We are going to make it easy for you and break down all the steps starting from step 1.
Step 1. Create an Etsy Account
We'll start from creating an account on Etsy.com if you don't have one already. When you go to etsy you'll see a button of sign up and there just add your email and password and you made your account.
Once you're logged in, click on "Sell on Etsy" from the drop down menu next to your profile picture. On the "Sell on Etsy" page, click "Open Your Etsy Shop" and confirm your email. Next, you'll need to set your shop preferences, such as language, country, currency, and income status. After you've set your preferences, click "Save and continue."
Then, choose a shop name that you like with 20 characters or less, check its availability, and save your chosen name.
Quick Tip: Always try to choose a name that is easy to remember and professional. I’ve also found that rhyming names also sit in your brain because of their synchronicity. so let's say I am creating a shop to sell invitation card I'll name it "Card Charms" It's also a name that is fun and professional both.
Remember, you can only change your shop name once. Once you've completed these steps, your Etsy shop will be set up and ready for business. (Further we'll explain how you can List your products too)
Step 2. Create an Account on Canva
After you've created your account on Etsy go and search canva.com and click on "Sign up." Once you're on the sign up page, you'll see options to either "Continue with email" or "Sign up with work email." Choose the one that suits you and enter your email address.
After that, you'll need to select a username for your account and hit "Create your account." Then Go to your Email address for a code from Canva, then enter it to finalize the sign up process.
As we've already explained Canva is an easy going platform and already in the home page you'll find all the information. Even if you don't know how to use Canva you can search up many beginners tutorial on YouTube and learn the basics of it. ( Yes! For this work you only need to learn the basics)
Step 3. How to Find your Design Idea
To do this, I either go to Pinterest.com and search for ideas like “Pink invitation card designs” and find many that I love. Never copy someone else’s idea, always take inspiration from it and customize it in your own way.
You can also use Freepik.com to find designs you like by searching for “wedding cards designs”. You’ll find plenty of ideas to choose from.
Finally, you can use Etsy to search for ideas that you like. You can take inspiration from the most popular products on Etsy and create a similar design (don’t copy the same one). This way, you can get a better understanding of what people are liking the most.
Step 4. How to Create Your own Design
Once you’ve found what you’re looking for, go to Canva. You can either click the “create your design” button to create your own design right from the beginning. Or, you can start searching on Canva’s search bar. For example, if you want to make a birthday card, you can search for “birthday card” on Canva.
You’ll find lots of Canva templates. Most of them are premium templates, but there are also free templates available (if you want more, you can buy the Canva pro version).
Now start editing your designs try changing the colors or design elements or change the font. Adjust as you want and you have your design made. Now let's explain how you can sell it.
Step 5. How Can you Sell your Product on Etsy
Let’s move on. Once you’ve created your Etsy business account, it’s time to start listing your products. Aim for at least 10 listings to maximize your visibility. You’ll need to include a few key elements in each listing.
First, you'll need images. Typically, you'll want to include at least one, but you can include up to 10. You can also add a video that shows your product from different angles.
In the listing details, make sure to include:
- Product name
- Maker’s name
- Date of creation
- Type (physical or digital)
- Detailed description
- Shipping cost
- You can group similar products together.
- Price
- Take into account materials, labor shipping costs
Now for digital product that are created on Canva, You can create a template for your Canva design and save it as a shareable link in your listing description. This allows others to directly edit your design in Canva.
However, it is important to note that the link is only for editing purposes and do add that the buyer will need to have a Canva account in order to access and customize there design.
If you want to upload a digital product on Etsy, start by saving your designs as PDF or PNG files. Then, when creating your Etsy listing, select the “Digital” product type. Once you’ve uploaded images of your designs, attach the corresponding files to your listing. Make sure to include your listing title, description and tags that clearly state what your design is used for and its dimensions.
This way, customers will be able to purchase your digital product directly on Etsy and personalize it using the Canva template link provided.

Total revenue = $4.36 * 3200 = $13,952
Listing fee per item = $0.20 * 3200 = $640
Transaction fee = 6.5% of total revenue = 0.065 * $13,952 = $907.28
Total fees = Listing fee + Transaction fee = $640 + $907.28 = $1,547.28
Earnings = Total revenue - Total fees = $13,952 - $1,547.28 = $12,404.72
